Keep Your Blinds, Shades and Shutters Clean for Any Season

 

 

Putting the polish back on your window treatments doesn’t have to be time consuming. In fact, it won’t be with Veneta™ window treatments. All you’ll need are some household items and a few handy tips. Follow these guidelines for your blinds, shades and shutters, and they’ll look their best for years to come.

Shutters

 

 

Out of all window treatments, Veneta™ shutters are some of the easiest to clean. After all, they typically only need to be wiped down and dusted. These shutters have a hard surface coating, the kind used on football helmets, that ensures you won’t have to worry about damage.

 

Don’t forget to tilt those louvers! You’ll want to wipe them down in the open and closed positions. Just use a feather duster, a dry cloth, or the brush attachment on the panel or frame. If you find more persistent buildup, use a cloth dampened with a little water and non-abrasive dish soap. (But in reality, this won’t be needed for most of us.) If you have shutters with TiltFree™, you won’t have a tilt rod getting in your way while quickly wiping down everything.

Faux Wood Blinds

 

 

Faux wood blinds are as easy to clean as shutters. A clean, dry cloth or feather duster should do the job. For tougher spots, just use a cloth dampened with water and add non-abrasive dish soap, if you need it. Like with shutters, dust and wipe down the slats in both the open and closed positions. Being thorough like this will cut cleaning time in half, and you can get on to other, tougher cleaning.

Vertical Blinds

 

 

Veneta™ vertical blinds have vanes that are moisture-resistant, so use a damp cloth to quickly clean them. The vanes are stain-resistant, too, so you should only need water, but any difficult spots will get out with a mild detergent or soap. You can also take vanes down for easier cleaning, and swap them out.

Cellular Shades

 

 

Many of the same tools for cleaning blinds and shutters can be used for cleaning cellular shades. A dry cloth, feather duster, and vacuum with brush attachment will all work. You can also get dust and debris off the shade with compressed air or a hair dryer at a cool setting. Just make sure to put the shade into a fully closed position so you can get at every nook, cranny and cell!

Roller Shades

 

 

Roller shades can be cleaned by dusting or with a handheld vacuum. Make sure to lower the entire shade so you can get every inch of it cleaned! For spot cleaning, just moisten a soft cloth or sponge (not the scratchy, abrasive side) – you can add a mild detergent, if necessary. Then blot the spot gently until the spot is out. Once you’re done, remember to let the shade dry while fully lowered.

Roman Shades

 

 

The fabric of a Roman shade can be kept its best with regular dusting. If you have to spot clean the shade, use lukewarm water and a soft cloth or sponge — just make sure it’s not dripping wet. Add mild detergent, if needed, and blot gently. Gently is key — you don’t want to crease or damage the fabric. You can also iron Roman shades if necessary, but keep the iron on a low-medium setting.

Sheer Shades

 

 

Like many of our shades, all you’ll need to use is a duster or dry, soft cloth for sheer shades. If using a vacuum, you should only use a setting for blowing off dust. Do not use “suction.” Sheer shades are 100% polyester and are not waterproof, so spot cleaning is not recommended. If you must, do so gently with a soft cloth or a sponge moistened with lukewarm water.

DualDrape™

 

 

DualDrape™ has separate fabric vanes that make cleaning this unique Veneta™ shade easy. You can dust or spot clean the shade, following the same procedures as many of our other products. You can take each vane down for cleaning, making the shade practical to keep beautiful. 

 

You can also put individual vanes in the laundry. To do so, you must follow a few rules:

 

1. Remove the fabric vanes you want to clean. They should unclip easily.
2. Fold the fabric and put it in a laundry bag before putting it in the washing machine.
3. Wash on a cold water gentle cycle. DO NOT use a spin cycle after the wash. We cannot stress this enough: when washing, DO NOT use any cleaning products containing bleach.
4. Take the fabric out for drying. Line dry them until damp before returning them to the headrail.
5. Reassemble the vanes onto the headrail and leave them open to dry. This helps to prevent wrinkles.

 

The vanes can also be ironed back into shape – press each one individually on the Nylon setting. The temperature should be around 200 to 220 degrees Fahrenheit.
